How to choose a candle warmer lamp: what to check before you buy

Most disappointment with warmer lamps comes from a mismatch: a jar that is too tall, a missing bulb, or no timer. Check these seven things and you will buy the right one first time.

1. Clearance: will your candle fit?

Measure the height of your candle jar, then compare with the lamp's clearance (the space between the base and the bulb). The bulb needs to sit above the wax, not inside the jar. Taller jars need adjustable or high lamps. If you plan to use big three-wick candles, filter the shop for lamps that suit large jars.

2. The bulb: included or not?

Most lamps use a GU10 halogen of around 35 to 50 W, which is the heat source. Some come with one or two fitted; some ship without. Look for the "bulbs included" notice or filter for lamps with bulbs included. If not included, see our bulb guide and the replacement bulbs range.

3. Timer and dimmer

A timer switches the lamp off by itself after a few hours, which is the single most useful safety feature. A dimmer lets you keep the glow soft once the room smells right. Look for lamps with a timer, and for dimming steps in the product details.

4. Footprint and weight

The jar goes under the shade, so check the base fits on the shelf or table where it will live, and that it is stable. Tall, narrow lamps tip more easily than wide-based ones.

5. Style and finish

It is on display, so choose what suits the room. Glass shades give a clear amber glow; metal and matt black suit modern rooms; floral and rope styles are softer. Browse by colour, for example gold or black.

6. Plug and safety marks

Check that the lamp has a UK plug and is made for UK mains (230 V). Do not use a lamp built for a different voltage with an adaptor.

Questions people ask

Do candle warmer lamps come with a bulb?

Many do, and we mark those with a "bulbs included" notice by the price. Always check the product page; if a bulb is not included you will need a GU10 halogen of the wattage the lamp recommends.

How tall a candle will a warmer lamp take?

It depends on the lamp. Height-adjustable models raise the shade to fit tall jars; fixed ones need a shorter jar. The product page lists the clearance, so compare it with the height of your candle.

Is a more expensive lamp better?

Not automatically. Price mostly reflects materials and finish. What matters for performance is clearance, bulb, and whether it has a dimmer or timer.
