Safety
Are candle warmer lamps safe? Sensible rules for everyday use
There is no open flame, which removes the biggest candle risk. But the bulb and shade get hot, so a few simple habits still apply.
The honest answer
A warmer lamp is safer than a lit candle in one big way: there is no flame to ignite curtains, or be knocked over. It is not safe in the sense of having no risk. The halogen bulb is hot, the shade near it gets hot, and it is mains-powered. Treat it like a table lamp with a small heater built in.
Eight simple rules
- Follow the instructions. Maximum bulb wattage and minimum clearance are printed for a reason.
- Use a stable, flat, heat-resistant surface. Not a rug, a stack of papers or the edge of a shelf.
- Keep it clear. Leave space around the shade: no curtains, paper, fabric or hanging decorations.
- Use only a container candle. A real glass, metal or ceramic jar, with the lid off.
- Use a timer or switch off. Do not leave it on while out or asleep.
- Let it cool before you touch it. That goes for bulb changes too.
- Keep cables tidy. Out of reach of pets and children, and not pinched.
- Check the plug and bulb. Stop using the lamp if the cable is damaged or the bulb looks cracked.
Compared with a lit candle
A lit candle has a flame well over 1,000°C, produces soot, and can spit or tip. A warmer lamp has none of those, and the bulb heat is much lower and contained. Many households with young children or pets prefer a lamp for that reason, while still keeping it out of reach. More in our full comparison.
Pets and children
Place the lamp high enough or far enough back that it cannot be pulled or knocked. The shade near the bulb can be hot to touch. And some scents are not suitable for all pets, so check with your vet if unsure.
For a safe choice, look at lamps with a timer and read how to choose a candle warmer lamp.
Lamps with timers
A timer switches the lamp off for you.
Questions people ask
Are candle warmer lamps safer than candles?
They remove the open flame, which is the main danger of a lit candle. They are still electrical heat sources with hot bulbs, so they need sensible use. Follow your lamp's instructions.
Can I leave a candle warmer lamp on overnight?
We recommend not. Use the timer or switch it off before bed or when you leave the house.
Are candle warmer lamps safe around pets and children?
Keep the lamp on a stable surface out of reach. The bulb and shade get hot, and the cable should not dangle.
